As I have been in computers since 1976, I have seen a lot of computers and operating systems come and go. Among my favorites are OS/2 Warp, OS-9, and LINUX. OK so I am a programmer and a hacker... but really, who knows operating systems better?
Having to use WINDOZE 3.1x and WINDOWS 95, 98, Windows XP at work along with NT, has given me an oportunity to compare operating systems in terms of reliability and ease of use. While programs for OS/2 are not as abundant as those for Windows, et. al., I find that in many cases I will prefer to use the OS/2 programs over Windows.... Lately, however, I have developed a real fondness for Ubuntu Linux as I find that it is now easier to install and maintain than Windows Vista.
The reason for this is simple. The Windows based systems tend to lock up more frequently, even the newer stuff. There also tends to be more frequent and disasterous disk crashes under Windows, 95, 98, XP, and NT. As a sysop, I found that OS2 can run for months without having to be shut down or re-booted. Try that with Windows, 95, 98, XP, NT, or even Vista. They will even lock up with nothing running. I have seen it happen.
